Chalk Paint And Wood Furniture: Frequently Asked Questions

Chalk paint is one of the easiest mediums to use when painting wood furniture. Chalk paint can be used to breathe life into your old wood furniture, fix up antiques or decorate brand new wood furniture. Whether you're trying to match your furniture to your bedroom or achieve an antiqued or distressed effect, chalk paint can help. The more you know about chalk paint before you start painting your wood furniture, the better.

What is chalk paint?

Chalk paint is a non-glossy, porous paint product that can be used to decorate and seal wood furniture.

How is chalk paint different from standard paint?

Chalk paint has a matte finish and must be covered in special wax to make the furniture moisture proof. When touched, chalk paint has a much less smooth texture than many types of paint. In texture, it feels closest to eggshell paint.

What are the advantages of painting your wood furniture with chalk paint?

Wooden furniture can benefit from applications of chalk paint in a variety of ways.

  • Chalk paint easily covers up stains and scratches without necessitating repair.
  • It doesn't require priming, sanding or any other type of preparation (other than dusting) in order to adhere to wood.
  • Chalk paint can extend the life of your wood furniture without going to the trouble of staining and varnishing.

How do you apply chalk paint to wood furniture?

Applying chalk paint is simple. First, clean off the piece of furniture. To do this, use a tack cloth to remove any dust and other debris on the piece. Next, use a natural bristle brush to apply the chalk paint to the furniture. You'll probably need to apply two or three coats of paint to the wood to fully cover up the wood.

Once the paint has fully dried, use a natural bristle brush to apply wax to the surface of the wood, and wipe off the wax with an old t-shirt.  If you're trying to achieve an antiqued effect, use colored wax. Colored wax will add a golden or brown tone to any chalk paint, and will fill in the cracks and crevices of the piece. If this is not the effect you desire, use clear wax.

Painting your wood furniture with chalk paint and seal coating it with wax is an excellent way to preserve, protect and decorate wood furniture. In this way, chalk paint can help your furniture last for many years to come.
